50) THX-1138 (1971) Dir. George Lucas - Lucas’ first feature film and the last of his that I needed to see. The dystopian future is very much inspired by 1984 (I’m referring to the book, since I have yet to see the movie) and a bit of Metropolis in there as well. At several points I was reminded of some more recent films like Equilibrium, Beyond the Black Rainbow, and Carré blanc (well they could also be said to be inspired by 1984 as well). Also don’t forget Plato’s Allegory of the Cave (now I feel all pretentious and smart and shit for mentioning some philosophy). Robert Duvall is pretty good here, but best stuff for me came from Donald Pleasance. If I had known that Pleasance was in the film, I probably wouldn’t have taken my time to finally watch this. Wish a version without the unnecessary CGI was more readily available though.
